Cable Technician

Job Summary

The cable technician establishes communications systems by installing, maintaining and repairing telecommunication facilities used by Zirrus to deliver voice, video and data services. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: splicing fiber optic and copper cable in both outdoor and indoor settings, read, create and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams, maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work sites, taking and maintaining accurate splicing and field notes and supporting project timelines.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Completes service orders and trouble tickets
  • Establishes voice, video and data connections by running, pulling, terminating, and splicing copper/fiber cables.
  • Verifies service by testing facilities and equipment; identifying, correcting, or escalating problems.
  • Document additions, moves and changes to facilities and service connections by labeling pedestals/poles and cables; recording plant information changes by updating service orders and trouble tickets.
  • Maintains network connectivity by troubleshooting and repairing outages.
  • Maintains customer relations by listening to and resolving customer concerns; answering questions.
  • Maintains safe work environment by keeping work areas neat and clean; adhering to Zirrus, OSHA and industry safety practices.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics and diagrams.
  • Provides weekend and holiday coverage by participating in scheduled work rotation
  • Maintains twenty-four-hour emergency service coverage by participating in on-call scheduling and staggered workforce hours; being available for call-out
  • Maintains and safely operates a company vehicle for work assignments
  • Cable Technicians must be able to distinguish color clearly to perform their duties, such as knowing which colors of wire needs to be cut or repaired.
  • Driving a company vehicle is an essential job function of this position, therefore you are subject to a MVR check upon hire, and annually thereafter.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in reading Staking Sheets
  • knowledge of how-to fusion splice both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Applications
  • Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure
  • Training in basic electricity
  • Knowledge of RUS practices for splicing and outside plant construction
  • Operation of test equipment
  • Operation of heavy equipment (bucket truck, backhoe, track hoe, etc.)
  • Knowledge of procedures for grounding and testing cable
  • Interprets staking sheets and schematics to complete work order
  • Interprets computer printouts of plant records to gain customer information
  • Interprets test results to determine procedures to clear troubles
  • Individual judgment and independent decisions used to determine procedures to carry out job duties
  • Communication with local customers, contractors, other utility personnel and company employees to accomplish results

 

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associates Degree in Electronics is preferred (any engineering discipline is acceptable).
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Two years Telecommunications field experience or related work is required.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft applications is required.
